Show Hand Cart Veteran I Goes To HistRewardl Joseph Slater, who had his right arm anrputated Inst week, developed pneumonia Sunday and passed away Tuesday inorillug. He survived thu shock of tho operation and felt nue apparently nnd seemed in the b(!st of spirits. Mr. Slater was a town character and had a host of friends. Ho was alwnju cheerful nnd will bo remembered for the droll parts ho used to Hke In home dramatics in tho carlyjdays. He was the son of Daniel and Nancy Slater and was born October 2, 1832, In Oldham, England. Ho became a member of tho Mormon church when about 15 years of ngc. On Janunry 19, 185C, ho left England for America, arriving In New York In March, crossing tho ocean on a Balling vessel. He crossed the plains with tho hand cart company, arriving In Salt Lake City AugUBt 27, 1860. On tho way ho walked sldo by sldo with Miss Mury Ann Webb and-threo days after arriving in Salt Lako City was married to her. Tho following month ho arrived In Lchl and has made this city his homo over since. With the posslblo exception of Lott Russon, Sr ho has mado more of tho adobes that are In tho homes of Lehi than has any other man. His sons are James, Joseph and Ncphl. His daughters daugh-ters aro Mrs. Sarah A. Mitchell, Mrs. Ellon Kemp 'and Mrs. Mary College. There Ib also n son dead. The fuuornl services wcro held In tho Third Ward mceUnghouBe Thursday Thurs-day and were largely attended. Bishop Henry Lewis presided. |
