L Wilding the former Ute tennis doubles star has been assigned to the U. U S. S bureau of fisheries staff at Seat Seattle le as this department predicted two weeks ago Young Wilding who completed work in a Ph D. D degree at the University of Indiana this spring is visiting at home this week preparatory to reporting for his new duties in the Pacific northwest He will be attached with the survey crew in connection with the salmon spawning conditions on the Columbia river as his first assignment Wilding's research work in which he studied the suffocation point of various various- types of fish leads him to believe that much work must be done in mountain streams to keep the fish life from being suffocated during the freezing months There may come a time he said when fish and game interests will find it feasible to put more dams in the mountain streams so that deeper bodies of water can assure the fish a breathing p place ce during the winter Fish authorities including A. A S. S Hazzard the former U. U S. S bureau of fisheries head located here with whom young Wilding got much of his early field training have pointed out the ne need d he says of utilizing as many small streams as possible for rearing grounds These little tributaries can be made to supply fish to the larger bodies of water just as well as the water supply and frequently the loss Joss of offis fis fishing ing privileges along these smaller streams is more than offset by improved fishing conditions in the larger streams Wilding was deeply interested in a field finding in Indiana which points out the tremendously high mortality rate with y young ung fish life Bluegill fish are comparatively scarce in Hoosier waters One day the bureau found a Bluegill nest and with the use of a huge removed slightly in excess of of the new hatch from the nest which was less than two feet across In half a dozen similar nests the hatch was of comparable size Enough he pointed out to fill the stream to the saturation point I in a short time if all lived yet et that particular type of fish is rapidly growing scarcer in Indiana |
