J Dailey Utah's mining mining min mm- I IN ing industry loses one of its most picturesque and best beloved figures In the story of his life the formula for success is found worthy of the interest of younger men seeking a point of beginning from which to chart their own ca ca- ca This his has especial significance in a time when many a youth is looking for a short cut that leaves hard work out of planning This man from his boyhood never turned from tram a task because it was difficult or irksome As a lad of 12 he left the little coal mining town of Silver SUver Brook Pa with his father and headed west Six years later he was working with a grading gang on railroad construction and kept at it for three years By that time im imbued hued with the pioneer spirit himself he set t oi out for Utah Landing in Eureka he tackled hard work again as a miner later going to Montana again to toil underground Returning to Utah in 1891 he donned cap and lamp and went be below below below be- be low in the old Mayflower mine at Park City That was the beginning of a noteworthy Career ca career career ca- ca reer in the states state's silver mining industry His willingness to work hard and ability acquired by an observant and keen mind soon set him apart It was not long before he was one among a company of glamorous figures in Utah's famed silver camp camp among among them the late Senator Thomas Kearns David Keith John Judge John J. J Daly and James Ivers Sr all passed to their reward and all remembered for the vital parts they played in the development of the Park and of the state and its capital city where ni 11 were later to live as public spirited citizens The Mayflower became part of the original Silver King Mining company Mike Dailey be became became became be- be came a foreman then superintendent and later assistant manager When the enlarged operation became the Silver King Coalition Mines company company com corn pany he continued with with-it until 1913 resigning then to engage in the hardware business in Po- Po catello Upon the death of Senator Kearns who had actively directed the Park City enterprise as its chief owner Mr Dailey was appointed appointee general manager the post he held at the time of his death Throughout his career he was a romantic figure in a romantic industry that has taken uncounted millions from the earth to add to the wealth of the state As this mans man's labors were lightened when he climbed to larger responsibilities he remained at heart a miner nevertheless He never permitted permit permit- ted the friendships he had formed earlier in life to wane There was always a hearty handclasp for everyone who had come to know him as Mike Milc e Dailey and they were legion His ability his industry his judgment his long experience and his practicality set him apart as a competent and successful man in his chosen field On the human side it was his loyalty considerateness geniality ready wit and friendliness that held him fast in the affections of the many men and women in all stations of life with whom he was associated in the nearly neary half century he spent in mining in the west vest He was a minded high-minded useful useful useful use use- ful and respected citizen and the community sustains a profound loss in his passing |
