A U U. basketball committeemen may be glad to do away with the junior unior and senior classifications for the annual tournament tour tour- by another year More I than one headache has been caused as officials mulled over the problem of deciding which division a team is entitled to enter I Moreover these headaches have not been limited en entirely entirely entirely en- en to the hard working members of the committee Teams and spectators have not been entirely satisfied with some of ot the decisions S P r There will be a certain amount of ot dissatisfaction too so long as a more definite line hue of distinction between be be- tween the two divisions is not established S. S Delegation of a team to either division is left too much to the judgment of the committee which tries to decide how ow good a brand of ball the team Is capable of playing Such an arrangement is bound to bring about some difficulty S One might presume that the junior division is for fr younger players but that is not ot n necessarily so Last year for instance the Ecker Studio team featuring featuring tea fea fea- fea turing a number of South high school play players rs walked off with the championship in the junior division with comparative case ease These players were barely past their middle ages yet they were literally too fast and capable capable capable capa capa- ble for the division which also drew players nearly ol old i enough to be fathers of some of the championship players S SA A team of soldiers from Fort Douglas got into the junior division last year ear and lost out in the first round Practically the same players from the Post performed in inthe inthe inthe the senior division the thc year before and went to the thc third round before losing p 0 0 The State Basketball league has already learned that the way out of a lot of worries is to do away with the two divisions It operated both divisions for a couple of seasons seasons seaSons sea sea- sons but discarded the junior section this winter and its officers declare there isn't half the difficulty there once was 0 0 0 So many teams sought entry in the thc junior division of the coming coining A. A A. A U. U tourney that it is likely to be as fast as the thc supposedly stronger senior division The junior section was completely filled before the committee was assured of more than eight in the senior group S S 0 Virtually every team asked asked- to be entered in the junior section The Magna A. A C C. offers an example All season long the Magna team has enjoyed the stellar I services services of Russ MagIe Magleby by coach at the Cyprus high school Magleby because of his coaching assignment is of course ineligible for the A. A A. A U. U tourney Magna must replace him with less touted material Inasmuch as Magna played a very close game with Rowers Shoe team of Lehi a senior division team with Magleby in inthe inthe p the lineup it was argued that Magna would not quite approach that caliber of performance with him out of the lineup If the committee arbitrarily put Magna in the junior division and decided that a team which had played alongside Magna all year long in the same league should be judged strong enough for th the senior division the committee committee com corn would be in hot hoc water immediately Then theres there's the case of the team from far away How is a committee in Salt SaIt Lake City going to be able to pass fair judgment upon the strength of a club from out of the state How can the Salt Lake City committee be sure the Indians from the reservation at Duchesne should go in the senior division How can a local committee be entitled entitled to judge the strength of a a. team before it has seen seen e n it If a definite standard cant can't be created by which to distinguish a junior and senior club it will be better betterto to do away with them altogether So far as a method of distinction is concerned the committee might set an age limit of 17 or 18 years or decide on the basis of the number of college or high school lettermen on the team It is true that some of the younger or less experienced men would stay out of the meet if they had to take their chances against th the themore themore more touted stars But if the committee doesn't establish a better way of classifying the teams many of the stars will be crowding crowding crowd crowd- ing ing their way into the junior section and taking unfair advantage of the inexperienced men anyway |
