E Lawrence Lawrence- Lawrence of ot Arabia now Aircraftsman Aircrafts man Shaw of the army In the experiments conducted over overa a year two period Lawrence stationed sta himself in unsinkable speed speedboats speedboats boats of his own design while bombs were dropped on him Early in 1932 the I air r ministry asked the admiralty to lend its target target tar tar- get ship Centurion for use by bombIng bombing bomb bomb- Ing airplanes This plan was abandoned aban aban- first because of ot the heavy expense expense ex ex- pense Involved and secondly because the thc Centurions Centurion's speed was but 1 16 knots This was considered clent for air bombing practice and Lawrence suggested speed boats The suggestion brought nothing bu but ridicule from the admiralty Lawrence Lawrence Law Law- rence induced the speed boat designer designer de de- signer Scott Paine to make him a boat It was an armored speed boa and it was so successful in tests that tha criticism was overcome |
