Dr Fishbein's Health Talks By DR MORRIS FISHBEIN EIN Over and over again I find rind it necessary essary to advise people to let their eyes alone when a cinder a piece of dust or some other foreign object gets into their eyes Their Is nothing that will make you more miserable than an irritating substance on the eyeball The condition condi- condi tion ion is so painful and causes so much watering o of the eye and md stickiness that hat it usually I is Impossible t 16 to sleep When something gets into your eye there here are certain things s you ou can do doand doand doand and other things you absolutely must not do The things you OU may do may maybe maybe maybe be listed as follows 1 1 Try not to close your eyelids 2 2 Hold the lids apart with your fingers ingers so that the tears which come may wash the eyeball I 3 It If this does docs not work catch hold of or the upper lid at its center and pull It down slowly over the lower lid id Then roll the eyeball upward and let go the upper lid Sometimes by y this method the eyelashes will brush off ort the foreign particle If H these simple measures do not work vork it Is best to consult immediately immediate immediate- ly y someone who knows how to treat treathe the he eye before end endeavoring to perform per per- form orm any manipulations upon it it Keep the eye closed I If It necessary cover it with a moist cloth until reaching caching someone capable of removIng removing ing ng foreign bodies bodles that may be embedded embedded em em- bedded in the tissues The cloth should preferably be a sterilized piece of bondage bandage moistened with either a saturated solution of boric acid or sterilized or distilled water The things you OU must not do are 1 You must not rubs the eye w with witha th tha a soiled handkerchief or with your fingers ingers 2 You must not try to pick something something some some- thing out of the eye with a Q toothpick toothpick tooth tooth- pick or any other hard object 3 You must not permit anyone with soiled hands to try to help you 4 You must never let anyone apply apply ap apply ap- ap ply medicines ointments magical stones tones or seeds or anything else to the he eye unless he h has been certified by y some competent authority as esp especially especially es es- es- es p capable in this field An infection of the eye may follow fol fol- low ow manipulation tion This infection may not only destroy the eye but by sympathetic sym pathetic inflammation completely ruin the sight ight of cil the other eye as well
