OCR Text Liberals Nurse Unique Misery Over N New wr Deal By BRUCE CATTON The old old fashioned fashioned die hard die hard conservative conservative con is not happy these days and the extreme radical never has been happy but it is doubtful if either of these groups is getting half hill the tho miser misery that is falling In the lap of a certain kind of at doctrinaire liberaL The conservative can at least reflect that he controlled the government for upward of a decade The radical can always cock his ear car for lor the rumble of down the streets of the dis dis- dis tant tent future But there is a certain kind of oC liberal to whom the present era seems to be bringing nothing but confusion and disappointment To be sure the actions that this liberal has always demanded of his government are being taken The program that he has clamored for lor for ter or years years years-or or something strikingly like it it-is it is being put Into effect The conservatives are in full retreat all along the line an and and i they haven't yet yel found a rallying point poin But the tragedy to the doctrinaire V liberal Ibe al is that all of this is being done in us the wrong way by the wrong wrong people The change came before he could pronounce his blessing upon It He had just got through proving that hat nothing of consequence could be expected from the present tion when it proceeded to take the wind out of ot his sails by adopting his whole program What has our liberal been demand ing all of these years Well he has called for a 3 planned economy He has wanted federal laws aws to protect union labor in the leading cading industries He has wanted the New York financial powers drastically curbed He has wanted the he government to crack down on the power trust He has wanted vast sums spent pent by Uncle Sam Sara on public works He has wanted a federal employment service He Helas has las wanted to see people like Frances Perkins Ickes and in Im Im- x government positions He has wanted an administration that would place human rights above property rights Every Everyone one of these goals has been reached Things that until recently recent recent- ly iy y looked like remote possibilities for forthe forthe the he millennium are now in actual operation But our liberal got left at the post Change caught him napping Fate dealt him a hand from the bottom of the he deck And his happiness these days lays is rending heartrending to observe
