careful in handling the he affair since participants will come from nations whose views of Asiatic affairs are Widely videly divergent diver- diver gent pent under existing conditions I I found d during m my trip through h China and und elsewhere that the peoples peoples peo peo- ples under the tho control of western nations or who belle believe they are suffering from such control seek national emancipation as the principal principal prin prin- cipal theme for our discussions Personally I think a mere de demand demand demand de- de mand for emancipation of Asia will do no good The suffering of Asia in my opinion to a great extent is due to the faults of Asiatic peoples and unfortunate circumstances which have existed for centuries Whether the present condition of Asia is due to the oppression of the western nations or to the Asiatic Asiatic Asi Asi- peoples themselves will be probably the most important topic of discussion at the conference At any rate a conference of this kind requires most delicate handling if it it is to be brought to a successful termination The Chinese and Japanese delegations delegations dele dele- consisting of about fifty members each apparently
