Show r g r e 1 L. L Frank Baum 3 g i r. r The Journey to t to the Nome Kings King's Domain I. I Having heard heard the story of ot Ozma Orma of ot Oz from her old friends the Scarecrow Scarecrow Scarecrow Scare Scare- crow and the Tin Woodman Dorothy related to them her own adventures and then went out with her friends to wind the Sawhorse which Ozma had caused to be shod with plates of ot gold so that Its legs would not wear out They came upon the Sawhorse standing motionless beside the garden I gate but when Dorothy was Introduced introduced introduced Intro intro- I to him he bowed politely and I blinked his c eyes es which were knots of ot wood and wagged his tall tail which was I only the branch of ot a tree What a a. remarkable thing to be beI I alive exclaimed Dorothy Doroth I quite agree with you replied the Sawhorse in a rough but not unpleasant ant voice A creature like me has hasI I no business to live as we all know But It was the magic powder that did it it so I cannot Justly be blamed Of course not not said D Dorothy rothY Ana And you seem to be of ot some use cause I noticed the Scarecrow riding upon your back Oh Oh yes Im I'm of ot use returned the Sawhorse and I 1 never tire never have to be fed ted or cared for lor In any way Are you asked the girl i Not very said the creature It I would be foolish to waste Intelligence on a common Sawhorse when so many professors need it But I know enough to obey my masters and to or whoa when Im I'm told to So Im I'm pretty well satisfied That night Dorothy slept In a pleasant pleasant pleasant pleas pleas- ant little bedchamber next to that oc occupied occupied occupied oc- oc by Ozma of ot Oz and perched upon the foot toot of f the bed and tucked her head under her wing and slept as soundly in that position as did Dorothy upon her soft cushions But before daybreak everyone was awake and stirring and soon the ad adventurers adventurers adventurers ad- ad were eating a hasty breakfast breakfast break break- fast Cast in the great dining room of ot the palace Ozma sat at the head of ot a long table on a raised platform with Dorothy Dorothy Dorothy Doro Doro- thy on her right hand and the Scarecrow Scarecrow Scarecrow Scare Scare- crow on her ber loft The Scarecrow did not eat of ot course but Ozma placed him near her so BO that she might ask his advice about the Journey while she ate Lower down the table were the I twenty seven warriors of ot Oz and at atthe atthe the end of ot the room the Lion and the Tiger were eating out of ot a kettle that had been placed upon the floor while fluttered around to pick up any scraps that might be scattered It did not take long to finish the meal and then the Lion and arid the Tiger were harnessed to the chariot charlot and the party was ready to start for tor the Nome Kings King's Palace First rode Ozma with Dorothy besIde beside be- be sIde her in the golden chariot charlot and I f t If To I First rode Ozma Ozma with ith Dorothy beside beald h. h her then then came e t the e others 1 holding fast tast in her arms Then came the Scarecrow on the Sawhorse with the Tin Woodman and marching side by side Just behind him After Arter these tramped the Army looking brave and handsome in their splendid uniforms The generals commanded the colonels and the colonels commanded commanded com corn the majors and the majors commanded the captains and the captains captains captains cap cap- commanded the private who marched with an air of ot proud Importance importance importance import Import- ance because it required so many officers of ot- fleets fleet's to give gi him his orders And so the magnificent procession left the palace and started along the road Just as day was breaking and by bythe bythe bythe the time the sun had bad come out they had made good progress toward the valley that led to the Nome Kings King's domain The road led for a time through a pretty farm country and then past a picnic grove that was very inviting But the procession continued to steadily steadily steadily stead stead- ily advance until cried In an abrupt and commanding manner Wait wait Walt wait Ozma stopped her chariot charlot so suddenly suddenly suddenly sud sud- denly that the Scarecrows Scarecrow's Sawhorse nearly ran into it it and the ranks of ot the army tumbled over one one another before they could come to a halt Immediately Immediately Immediately Im Im- Im- Im mediately the yellow hen struggled from Dorothys Dorothy's arms and flew Clew into a clump of ot bushes by the roadside the matter called the Tin Woodman anxiously Why wants to lay her egg that's all said Dorothy Lay her egg repeated the Tin Woodman in astonishment Yes she lays one ono every morning about this time and its it's quite fresh Cresh said the girl But does your our foolish old hen supPOSe suppose suppose sup sup- pose that this entire cavalcade which Is bound on an important adventure is going to stand still while she lays her egg inquired the Tin Woodman earnestly What else can we do asked the girl Its a habit of ot and she cant can't break herself of ot it it Then she must hurry up said the Tin Woodman Impatiently No no exclaimed the Scarecrow If It she hurries she may lay scrambled eggs That's nonsense said Dorothy But Dut wont won't be long Im I'm sure sure So they stood and waited although all were restless and ancl anxious to pro pro- And by and by b the yellow hen came from the bushes saying Kutkut Kutkut Kutkut Kut kut kut kutt ka-daw-kutt Kut kut-kut kut ka daw What is she doing singing doing singing her lay asked the Scarecrow ward For march For march shouted the Tin Woodman waving his axe and the procession started just as Dorothy had once more grabbed In her arms anyone going to get my egg cried the hen in great excitement Ill get It said the Scarecrow and at his command the Sawhorse pranced into the bushes The straw man soon found the egg which he placed in his Jacket pocket The cavalcade cavalcade cavalcade alcade having moved rapidly was even far in advance but it It did not take the Sawhorse long to catch up with It It and presently the Scarecrow was riding in his accustomed place behind Ozma's chariot charlot What shall I 1 do with the egg he asked Dorothy I dont don't know the girl answered Perhaps the Hungry Tiger would like It it It would not be enough to fill till one of ot my back teeth remarked the Tiger A bushel of ot them hard boiled might take a a. little of ot the edge off ott my ap appetite tite but one egg isn't good for tor anything at all that I know of ot No it wouldn't even make a sponge cake said the Scarecrow thought thought- fully tully The Tin Woodman might carry it with his axe and hatch It but after all I may as well keep it myself for tor fora tora a souvenir So he left it in his pock pock- et They had now reached that part of ot the valley that lay between the two high mountains which Dorothy Dorothyy had seen leen from her to tower ver window At the far tar end was wa the third great mountain which blocked the valley and was the northern edge of ot the Land of ot Ev BY It Jt was underneath this mountain that the Nome Kings King's palace was as said to be but it would be some time before they reached that place The path was waR becoming rocky and difficult for tor the wheels of ot the chariot to pass over and presently a deep gulf guU appeared at their feet teet which was too loo wide for tor them to leap So Ozma took a small square of ot green cloth from her pocket and threw it upon the ground At once it became the magic carpet and unrolled Itself far tar farenough farenough enough for tor all to walk alk upon The chariot charlot now advanced ad and the green carpet unrolled before it t crossing the gulf on a level with Its banks bank so that all palM passed d over in safety easy enough said the Scarecrow I wonder what will wUl happen happen happen hap hap- pen next nuL Ho lie was not long In making the discovery discovery dis dis- dis- dis covery for tor the sides of ot the mountain came closer together until finally there was but a narrow path between them along which Oama and her party were forced to pass in single file me They not now heard a low and deep noi thump thump thump which I echoed throughout the valley and I seemed to grow louder as they advanced ad ad- Then turning a corner of ot rock they saw before them a huge form m which I towered oer above e the path i for more than a a hundred h efe fe feet The form torm was that of ot a gigantic man built I out of ot cast iron and it stood with one foot Coot on either cither t the narrow road and swung over Its Us right shoulder an immense iron mallet with which It constantly pounded the earth These resounding blows explained the thumping sounds that they had heard for tor the mallet was much bigger than thana a barrel and where it struck the tho path between the rocky sides of ot the mountain mountain mountain moun moun- tain it filled all aU the space through which our travelers would be obliged to pass Of Ot course courM they at onca once halted a safe sate distance away from the terrible Iron trOD mallet The magic carpet would do them no good in Jn this case for tor it was wall only meant to protect them from any dangers upon the ground beneath their feet and not from dangers that ap apt in the air above abon them Wow Yow said the Cowardly Lion with a shudder It makes me dreadfully dreadfully dread dread- fully nervous o to 0 see that big hammer pounding so 80 near my head One blow would crush me into a doormat The on ir-on ant gl-ant Is a fine tine tel low said and works as stead ly as a clock lie was made for the Nome om I retired then to a position In the rear where he turned his painted face tace to the rocks and began to think Copyrighted by L L.
