Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Gemmell club's basketball team broke even for the week, winning one and losing one. Both games were held on the club floor. Mint cafe played the club February 18, one of those nights when the boys couldn't do anything any-thing right.' Passing was off and it looked as if someone had put a lid on the basket, because Gemmell missed shot after shot. Not to take anything away from the Mint team, the boys played bang up ball and hustled like a bunch of beavers. In the end it paid off 58 to 49 for Mint. An improved Salt Lake air base team played the boys Tuesday Tues-day night and the club scored a two-point victory 49 to 47. The lead changed hands about five times, but when the timer's gun ended the game Gemmell was in lead position. , Next on the docket for the club team is the Tntermountain AAU tournament in the Deseret gym in Salt Lake. Coach A. J. Boberg has been busy strengthening his team. He signed Tally Stevens last week and with one more boy of this caliber his outfit will be hard to take. Good luck, "Bo", the Bingham fans are behind you. BYU has sent their western division champions across the mountains to challenge the Wyoming Wyo-ming cowboys for the conference confer-ence title. This year Wyoming lias one of tile "outstanmng Teams" of the nation. BYU has their work cut out for them. The cougars cou-gars have a well-coached, wise team. My opinion is that Wyoming Wyo-ming will win in three straight heats. How many of you have read the articles dealing with heavyweight heavy-weight champions from Sullivan to Louis, written by James J. Johnson and appearing in a Slt Lake paper? I have been wondering won-dering how many agreed with him in the way he had them rated: rat-ed: Jack Johnson first and Jack Dempsey sixth. He ranked Seh-melling Seh-melling ahead of Baer. If I remember re-member right, Baer did everything every-thing to Schmelling but give him a singing lesson. So I disagree with Mr. Johnson's John-son's selections. In my book there has only been one Dempsey. Demp-sey. How long do you think the Jeffries that fought Johnson in Reno, Nevada, on July 4, 1910, would have lasted against Dempsey Demp-sey in his prime or Joe Louis of today? Jeffries had been out of the ring five years and was 25 pounds overweight when he went into the ring with Johnson and it took Johnson . 15 rounds to beat him and then he didn't knock him out. I'm afraid a lot of us won't a-gree a-gree with Mr. Johnson. Baseball is beginnin" to hit the sports pages. This year there will be only seven minor leagues go to the post at starting time and it will be a problem for them to finish. So a big year is predicted pre-dicted for semipro ball throughout through-out the country. Our own Industrial league will have their first meeting Saturday Satur-day night. Officers will be elected elect-ed and the deck cleared for the coming year. From what I can learn, every effort will be made to have baseball in Utah. In my opinion that is as it should be. See where Bucky Harris has signed to manage the Philadelphia Philadel-phia Nationals. After leaving Washington and then signing for the Phil job, Bucky should be recommended for a medal for bravery. I Until next week, AL. |
