L Ferguson president of the national chamber from Newport Newport New New- I port News Va They were immediately taken by automobile to the Hotel Utah where quarters had been reserved for them then and later In the afternoon were driven to Bingham canyon for Inspection of the largest copper mine on earth Homer L. L Ferguson of Newport News Va president of the chamber of commerce U. U S. S A. A and pr president of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock company said upon his arrival here We Ve are particularly pleased to visit Salt Lake as on the previous trip to a meeting of the board of directors of the chamber jn in n San Francisco it was not possible for them to stop in Salt Lake but a very short time The big problems that confront the commercial world today are receiving the earnest consideration of or the th chamber of commerce of the United States and this chamber through its committees and by means of or referenda referenda refer refer- enda is trying to help solve these problems correctly We Ve have just I completed d' d the referendum on on remedial railroad legislation the results of 01 which were given out in Denver We propose to follow this matter up uJ through con congress ress and trust that a suitable solution will be found by the end of the year Another pressing problem of even greater significance is the question of ot foreign trade and the rehabilitation of Europe the first step in which is isto isto isto to make it possible for Europe to getto get getto getto to work again and that right speedily In cooperation with the great government government government govern govern- ment departments the Chamber of Commerce of the United States has Invited missions of business men representing representing representing rep rep- resenting England France Italy and andI Belgium m to attend an international I trade convention as guests of the chamber These business missions will be headed by either ministers of state or other important government Officials and when they arrive in this country the latter part of September they will hold a series of conferences with the foremost business men Inthe in inthe inthe the United States with a view of placing their great problems before us I so that we can best help them Other public questions on which I we are actively engaged now through our our committees are public utilities and highways both of or great importance ce to every section of the country The question of public utilities in particular lar is only of less Importance than that of the railroads and it is certainly certainly certainly an amazing state of affairs when such a vital business finds itself un unable ble to make a living Chicago was selected as our starting starting starting start start- ing point because of its centra location location location loca loca- tion said President Ferguson and the officers and members gathered from all parts of the country al although although although al- al though meetings of the board are or ordinarily ordinarily ora or- held at Washington g OPPORTUNITY TO HELP We are taking the trip at the invitation tation of ot J.
