Show I EDITORIALS BY BYTHE I ITHE THE PEOPLE I Complains of Hughes Picture at the Rex Salt Lake Lake City November 3 1916 i To the Editor of The Telegram On account of the Salt Lake theatre j I being so crowded Wednesday evening I we could not get in to hear Brigham Roberts speak and so we went on around past the Rex hex theatre and stopped in to see the play We were sold tickets to a play called the Chalice of Sorrow but when we went inside we found a very much bored crowd patiently sitting out the pictures and sayings of ot Candidate tate Hughes in his last swing around the he country and waiting to get their moneys money's worth when the play cameon came ame cameon on the screens I I What we would like to know is If JC Mr Swanson is running a political advertising ad a advertising house why dont don't he feature the politics and candidate upon the front of ot his place and allow people to h have ve some choice in the matter so they may not be lured into a political gathering that is not to their lilting liking and pay ten cents per for the promotion promotion promotion promo promo- tion of other peoples' peoples political fortunes fortunes fortunes for for- tunes Well Veil at any rate the crowd in the Rex were not of the Hughes persuasion persuasion persuasion per per- suasion and refused to enthuse they sat out the entire round of ot Hughes Hushes thunder and lightning lightning lightning-in in blank silence until the pictures were given givena a filling of our Teddy and the old affection so many of ot our people have for T R. R it that has not yet entirely died out burst out in a fair but rather brief measure of applause We had almost decided that this was our Chalice of ot Sorrow advertised advertised adver adver- upon the front of the theatre and that the play was over when scenes of Mexico and intrigue and rapine were thrown upon the screen and we at once realized we were about to witness the second act in the Hughes advertising J play layo When the undersigned speaks of ot Mexico it 1 is from personal knowledge of all of that unhappy country and its well meaning but much abused and distracted people We have lived and worked in Mexico and aud know the place from border to border and we can truthfully say that we have yet to know know know-as as a fact fact of of any American representative seized and thrust in I Jail jail as as depicted in the Hughes play Wednesday evening We know from personal knowledge that many AmerIcans Americans Amer Amer- leans in Mexico are not what they be and that some of them affront the Mexicans in their own country and we ar not surprised when some of ot I them fare badly and these are generally gen th the people who denounce our government and demand intervention gen I I The undersigned has been a stranger among the Mexican people far out among them and they fed me and slept me and would not take pay except except ex ex- it t were in some regular hostelry and no trouble or discourtesy any time or or place Therefore we cannot let such Buch demoralizing and really harmful stuff as that depicted upon the I I screen Wednesday evening go without without with with- out a most earnest and vigorous protest pro pro- test If H there here could be anything calculated to turn earnest and thoughtful American American Amer Amer- ican citizens from the Hughes standard standard stand stand- ard turn them to the bright clear sunlight of the great future turn them to humanity and the helping hand for all the alt the Hughes play at the Rex will certainly accomplish that very tiling thing The first act of the Chalice I of ot Sorrow v was tiresome the second act was really distressing After Alter the play we came out Ina in ina a bad frame of mind but the tho only way we found to make our protest and ease our feelings was to take tale our two straw votes and make a big X mark for Bamberger and hurry out for a great breath of fresh air I Sincerely WM I.
