| Show JUST FOLKS V- V S. S I I BL DU Copyright 1932 1032 by Edgar A. A Quest Guest CITY PIGEONS I watched them from the windows common pigeons in a flock lock Who make their nests In nooks of stone which line linea a city block And I wondered with the country fresh and green not far away Why there among the haunts of trade those birds prefer to stay No blade of grass Is left them and no warm fresh earth to tread Today the sun Is shining and blue skies are overhead But the city pigeons linger In cathedral aisles of gloom And seem to be contented where no treo comes Into bloom It would seem that birds of or freedom would not linger linger lin lin- ger in the town Where all aU Is cold and harsh and grim and men rush up and down But winter comes to woodland and snow mow the valley valley val val- ley icy fills Ills And gentle folks In buildings tall strew crumbs on window sills For as I watched and pondered I saw across the way A woman place some bits of bread upon the granite granlie gran gran- ite lie gray pray And all the pigeons knew her and knew the meal was good And why they choose to stay In town I think I understood |
