THE BEER TAX ANGLE IT IS probable that during the coming year we are going to hear a whole lot mo more e about the proposal to legalize the sale of real beer and collect a federal tax on it both as asa asa asa a means of knocking the props from under the racketeering beer barons and as a means of Df refilling an empty federal treasury That being the case it might be enlightening to look at a few figures on the matter In 1914 a 1914 a normal prewar year year Amen Ameri Americans tans cans consumed a little littlemore more than barrels of beer on which customs and excise taxes were levied at the rate of about a dollar a barrel By 1919 however the tax on beer stood at 6 a barrel and the public accepted it as a not too exorbitant rate Now get out your pencil Suppose legalIzed legalized legalized legal legal- beer were sold in this country this year to the extent of 1914 consumption and suppose suppose suppose sup sup- pose it were taxed at 6 a barrel What would Uncle Sam get Just Would it come in handy
