Show CAMOUFLAGED NEWS r A DISPATCH purporting to carry news from A J Chattanooga says that the Tennessee city has something unique in the way of clubs clubs clubs- the Useless Citizens' Citizens club It numbers among its members a former United States senator the president of the chamber of commerce pastors lawyers physicians and business men Its motto is Knock but do nothing It has no maj major or projects It has no dues no officers and meets every Monday to swap yarns and talk of nothing constructive When a new member joins he is lashed to a chair and nd the older members go through his pockets pockets pock pock- ets and take from him as m many ny dollars as there are members in the club Thus each novitiate pays one dollar more than the last preceding member There is nothing very new in this to entitle it to be carried on the telegraph wires as news Every city has such clubs though they may be called by other names Some of them are associations for this that and the other They meet say much and do little or nothing Reports of at their activities help to keep Janitors busy emptying editors' editors waste wastebaskets baskets That's about the only good they do keeping do-keeping keeping the employment up in the waste basket jani- jani and letter-carrying letter businesses And it takes up the slack time of the members mem mem- bers for bers-for for they might be doing something more unnecessary |
