Show RE REWARD r ARD OF MERIT l MERITT T THE HE unanimous indorsement by the city commission of the reappointment of Chief Knight as head of the fire department c can n be regarded in I no O other way than a tacit approval of meritorious and efficient service over a period of many years in that wing of public service Mr lVIr Knight rose rapidly in the department and has won no little recognition not only at home but in other cities where his labors are known and understood It II is to his credit that while he has been chief the department has been entirely free from politics and political participation and with the acknowledged efficiency of the service service service ser ser- vice no public criticism has attached during a time when other branches of the city government government government gov gov- have come under fire The new city commission probably recognized recognized recognized the mark of efficiency that lay upon the fire department as well as responded to general public indorsement of the service in making plans for a revamping of many de departments departments departments de- de of the city government The people who very decisively overthrew the old administration did not contemplate the removal of those department heads and others whose genuine public service had been beyond question The shafts of criticism during the late campaign and after were not aimed at public servants who had given good accounts of themselves and who therefore were outside the pale of political fortune We do not happen to know whether Mr Knight is a Republican or a Democrat this Democrat this is a nonpartisan form of government nor nor whom he supported for mayor if any but the record shows his department to be efficient and that ought to be enough |
