Show HOME ABODr "THAT FEJIiLE DETECTIVE." Os Saturday last we published, under the head of "That Female Detective," part of an article from tbe Philadelphia Frtu. It was in the form of special correspondence from Salt Lake City, and purported mainly to bo a description of an ad-venture ad-venture of Miss Jennie Coulter, the young woman who is credited with stuffing emigration agent O'Brien, of New York, with a tissue of glaring glar-ing anti-"Mormon"faiseboods. The correspondent represented that Miss Coulter was placed In great Jeopardy on her arrival at American Fork, because of tho anger of the "Mormon" "Mor-mon" people, being aroused against her. The horrible "Mormons"' were restrained from attacking her, however, by the fear of Governor Thomas calling upon the garrison at Fort Douglas to hurl Itself upon tho Inhabitants of tbe little burg. Tbe Infamous falsifier who sent the mass of misrepresentation to tbe Frtu was foolish enough to mention men-tion names notably thoso of Dr. and Mrs. Brush, non-"Mormons," working In the same interest as that in which the truth-economizing Jennie was supposed to be operating. operat-ing. The Doctor comes to the front with the following manly self-defense, and refutation of the infamous slanders referred to: " Dhior Detent XeicK Yesterday copy of tho News was handed mo and my attention was called to an article entitled "That Female Detective" in which was embodied em-bodied a clipping from tho Philadelphia Philadel-phia Presa from a Salt Lake correspondent, correspon-dent, of which the following ia a part: Vhe& the intrepid school-teacher ar rived at tht town where the formerly kept school to vi-u her incceiaor aire. The Dr. and Mrs. llrath were established in the town throagh Mrs. Coalter'a good ofleeeandbis fnendscanntt understand his recent ac-Uon." ac-Uon." Allow me to say that tbe above clipping has no foundation whatever. Neither I nor Mrs. Brush have seen Mlsa Coulter alnce she came to Utah Sbe did not come to this place where we hare been established permanently permanent-ly since we cam to Utah. Ws havo not seen her for aix months. "When Miss Coulter made the statement state-ment before O'Brien in New York, and which was published in the Utah papers, several Mormon people spoke to me about It. I told them that Miss Coulter was probably misrepresented by the newspaper reporters, and that she would likely be in Juh soon, and that they could interview her If they so desired.; "When she arrived in Utah she was called upon by a reporter of the American Amer-ican Fork Indtpaident, and she said that the statement as published by the Salt Lake papers as a whole was not as she "made- before O'Brien in New York. In the American Fork Jnde-patdent Jnde-patdent of October 21 you will find the above, as the Interview was published InfnlL. "Now allow ma to say that the author au-thor of the article may have been In Salt Lake, but .the real author la a certain female of American Fork, a shoo peddler, who is seeking apoM-tlon apoM-tlon In the schools of Utah, and through envy and spito caused our names to appear in the article. We cams to Ulan to save souls, and we thank God we are permitted to .work for Him. Our motto has been, "Do unto others as you would others Jo unto you.' and thus we treat tbe Mor-non Mor-non people, as we wish to be treated and we get along very nicely. n. L. Bansn, M.D. Pleasakt GnovE, Utah, November 12.1S90" In response to our request for Information In-formation in relation to the bogus female martyr, whom the J'ress correspondent cor-respondent asserted had armed herself her-self with a mammoth revolver, as protection against "Mormon" as. faults, we have also" received the following fol-lowing clear and succinct statement: state-ment: Editor Dcstrtt .Yew: "I read tbe sensational story alleged al-leged to be .from Miss Coulter to an emigration agent of New York; also the article clipped from the Philadelphia Philadel-phia Tress, which appeared In yours of the 11th insL regarding the alleged, angry excitement of the Mormons as stated in tbe Salt Lake dispatch. lam somewhat acquainted with Miss Coal-ter; Coal-ter; also with Dr. and Mrs. Brush, As yon want some facts In regard to tba wonderful little "brave woman," I will say that ths pnt np at my. hotel for three months after coming from Salt Lake City. Sbe had neither dried flsa nor agebrnsh Ares and seemed quite sane while the was here. Dr. Brash and wife cams here last winter, Mrs. Brssb taking lbs place of I Miss Coulter, as teacher in the Presbyterian Pres-byterian school at this place. When the New York article appeared Dr. Brash was very indignant about tbe falsity of it, and talked to mo about it. When Miss Coulter returned to Utah she landed in American Fork. Dr. Brush asked me to Interview her for tbe purpose of finding out If she had beon reported correctly by tbe New York press. I told tbe doctor I was going to American Fork that day and would call on her or would askareport-er askareport-er of ths Independent to interview her, which he did, and aha denied the article ar-ticle In the main, but admitted some of tho statements to be hen. She did not come to Pleasant Grove at all; neither did Mr. or Mrs. Bush see her; neither wero tbe Mormons angry or excited about her lies, nor was the Doctor's practice disturbed or lessened In tho least In consequence of ber falsifying. The Doctor is a gentleman, so tar as I know him. lie b fairmlnded enough to want the truth held forth about a people who have treated him as a stranger should bo treated since he came here. Ho says ho came here stuffed full of Just such scare-crow stories as the one In tho Philadelphia JVcar, but not having encountered any trouble with the Mormons, be well knows tbe stories wero like Mias Coulter'smalicious Coul-ter'smalicious humbug. The trouble Is with some bogus Christians, including in-cluding Miss Coulter, that the Doctor has since bis arrival here mingled in a reasonable way with the peoplo and that conrao Is a sufficient cause for thera to lie about him. It he bad kept himself aloof from the people and continued to believe tbe stuff bo had heard before he camo here, and, when he visited bis home in Pennsylvania, bad slandered tho Mormons as Miss Coulter did, he would not have been a victim of the vile misrepresentation that appeared in tho Philadelphia Press. I think tbe Doctor can trace the serpent from American Fork to Salt Lake City, and If be finds the author of that dispatch the vile person will bat a to hunt his hole or do some first-class first-class lying to screen himself. Respectfully, Re-spectfully, F. Belhs. Pleasant GnovE, Utb, November Novem-ber 12. 1830. "Sagebrush" Jennio ought to be atbamed of herself. |
