A special spe-cial containingSouthern laclfic officials offi-cials came in collision with a work train in the middleofthcLivermore tunnel, near Altamont, at i 30 o'clock today. Tho engine of the special train struck the rear of the work train, piling up several flat cars In a general wreck. Adolph S. Smith, a brakeman on the work train, was killed. The work train was 'hauling the earth excavated by the steam shovel at the great slide near the tunnel, and was returning to Altamont to a side track to allow the passageorthe special train. Conductor Con-ductor Kielenberger, or the work train, states that his train was moving mov-ing at a six mime rate at the time or Uie accident. There were seventeen fiat cars in the train, and Smith was presumably sitting on the rear car, as his body was round on the cab or the engine of the special. An organized posse fronv Sau Pedro, headed by Sheriff Chavez, found the (rail of icese rotoers,anu,iollowing closely, overtook them last night in the Sandia mountains, where they were hiding. At this point the possesaw a man standing beside a horse holding hold-ing a Winchester rifle in his hand. They rode within speaking distance and ordered the man to throw down his gun. He reftiscd, when the tarty began firing. After a Tew -allots had lecn exchanged the man surrendered and was relieved oi his gun and pistols. He proved to be Frank Cody, the companion of Lee White In the Lamy hold-up. Cody was apparently on guard duty, and the posse then began a hunt for White, who was found in a gulch near by after some hours' search. White, finding that resistance meant dead, quietly surrendered. The gang wereimmedlattly brought to this city and lodged In jail awaiting await-ing examination. |
