Show Fire and AVater in filenivooif. 8aya a correspondent to the JffcA-fiikl JffcA-fiikl Adrooaic: Thursday afternoon, the 23th of August, tbe little town of Glen-wood Glen-wood was wild with excitement over a fire that occurred on (lie llcndrickson estate. From the lust Information that can be gleaned, it appears that some little boys were playing by tbe corral and were probably trying to burn bark on some cedar posts, when the fire caught the stacks of hay Immediately Im-mediately adjoining. The tiamea fanned by a wet wind spread very rapidly and soon enveloped tho entire en-tire yard. There was no water near enough to use to advantage, and by the time It was turned so as to be of avail, three bay stacks, a straw stack, tables, corrals, etc., were one great flame-. Tho citizens, however. lost no time, and soon near a hundred and fifty of them were fighting the fire demou. Men, women and children lent their aid with a will and it was with the greatest ditll-culty ditll-culty that the granary adjoining tile bouse was saved. Kortu nately, two days before, the grain had been threshed and thusaved. Kot more than thirty feet from the burning ttacks were the grain stacksand hay of A. T. Oldroyd. Had these caught ou fire undoubtedly the homo of that gentleman would be in ashes to-day. Tbo lorn will probably reach two hundred dollars. Sunday, Aug. .11, Glenwood was tho scene of a flood. About oue o'clock It begau raining and In a few minutes It begau pouring In almost al-most a blinding sheet, causing the water to flaw in the streets. Not long after was heatd a terrible rumbling sound ir the eastern part of town, and (he peopio knew what It meant. People were Just starting to church but the flood that came rushing through the streets caused them to abandon that idea and turned their attention to protecting their property from the flood. Two of tho street looked like young 3ctlcr; cedars, roots of trees, boulder", etc., came tumbling through tbe streets In Johnstown sty-Is. Lots were nicely watered and In eomi Instances a rich layer of alluvial soil was placed over then. Glenwood Is occasionally the fceneof small floods, but rarely such as this ays us a visit. |
