L. Turpin sounded a call this week for help in, the critical areas. Sportsmen should be on the lookout look-out near the winter feed grounds, Turpin said. If the deer herds are startled there's usually a coy- 1 a Stray d in the herd- He should be chased out before he packs up with other hounds and the whole herd is endangered, Turpin Tur-pin said. The situation is not critical yet But later the deer reach a midwinter mid-winter weakened condition during severe winters which gives the hounds the advantage. Deer are chased until they die of fatigue or are hamstrung by the hounds, Turpin explained. xCats usually lie in wait for the birds. They can be seen around shelter areas where birds find cover for the night. A single cat will wipe out a sizeable quail covey in short order unless stopped, stop-ped, the game chief warned. If sportsmen are unable to cope I with a situation, they should contact con-tact the local warden immediate-' ly so that strays can be properly separated from the game and birds. Dog and cat owners are urged' to cooperate in the winter wildlife problem, Turpin concluded. |
