Show WORK BEGAN MONDAY' ON MAKING OF UTAH AUTO PLATES Utah's 1948 auto license plates started rolling off presses in the Utah state prison factory Monday just three weeks before the date they will go on sale. The dies for passenger plates, long awaited by the prisoners, idled through lack of work since early summer, now are on the presses, and full production of 2000 pairs daily is expected when , the machines begin operation. W. P. Van Fleet, deputy warden in charge of production, said the crew was delayed in starting be- j cause the state tax commission was late in ordering dies. The delay j was attributed to indecision as to the slogan the plates will carry. I The inmates will need about 15 weeks to make the 170,000 plates ordered by the tax commission. Mr. Van Fleet predicted that the j opening of plate sales at the capitol and in OgdenProvo, Logan and Richfield branches Dec. 15, will see at least 35,000 pairs delivered. |
