Show Police Warn On Unsafe Cars; Request Checking "Jalopies" and other vehicles in unsafe condition were the target of a police warning issued here today. "Traffic tickets will be issued to one-eyed drivers and to owners who operate their cars with burned burn-ed out rear or stop lights," Chief H. M. Weight said. He also asserted as-serted that drivers who operate cars with bad brakes or other obviously dangerous condition could be charged with reckless driving in case of accident. This action by the police department de-partment supports the community's communi-ty's May safety program, "To check accident, double check your car," a campaign sponsored nationally na-tionally by the National Safety Council. "Being a good driver means that you are just as concerned about the safe condition of your car as you are about following traffic regulations," Chief Weight eaid. "Jalopies and other rundown run-down cars are a public hazard." The Springville Safety Council, which is sponsoring the May safety safe-ty program, suggests that motorists motor-ists check the following safety equipment: brakes, head light, rear and stop lights, tires, windshield wipers, muffler, steering, glass, horn and rear-view mirror. A nation-wide check of vehicles by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 1946 showed that one out of three cars had some "Obvious and hazardous defect." |
