Show UTAH COUNTY MAPS BIG CUT IN BUDGET Setting a public hearing on the 1941 Utah county budget for December De-cember 2 6 and discussion of fire-fighting fire-fighting problems with mayors from various communities of the county featured the Monday meeting meet-ing of the Utah county commission. commis-sion. The hearing will be held in the commissioners' chambers at 2 p. m. on Che day following Christmas, Christ-mas, according to Marcellus Niel-son Niel-son of Mapleton, county auditor. The tentative budget, as now set up, totals $472,559.50, or $2152 less than the 1940 budget. The largest increase is for public welfare, with $125,000 set up as against $103,000 for this year. Several departments show large decreases, such as the county infirmary, in-firmary, where an improvement program was carried on this year. This department's budget, totaling $27235 this year, is tentatively set at $19885 for next year. The memorials fund, where $12,885 was expended this year for remodeling of the old Provo post office for Provo city offices, Is listed at but $5300 for 1941. Election costs fell from $15,000 this year to $3000. A revision of various figures will probably be made by the commission com-mission in several instances before be-fore the final budget is adopted, Sylvan W. Clark of Lehi, county chairman, said. The mayors from the various communities asked that the county coun-ty increase the amount set up in the general fund for fire-fighting from $4000 to $10,000. The county commission is not paying its proportionate share of the fire-fighting costs for fire protection in areas outside of the corporate limits of the cities and towns, John E. Booth, Spanish Fork mayor, who acted as spokesman spokes-man for the group, declared. County commissioners asked each city to submit data on the number of fires in each community commun-ity during the past five years, together to-gether with amount of equipment used and the fire-fighting costs. After this information is received, receiv-ed, the commission will study the budget figure and determine whether whe-ther or not a raise is justified, Mr. Clark said. Eureka city officials and its fire chief asked that an appropriation be set up to pay the Eureka fire department to assist in fighting fires in the Dividend district. This request was also taken under advisement. |
