Show duty to October and am now at S present time in New Guinea. I haven't been lucky enough to meet anyone I know oyer here in New Guinea as yet, although I did meet two boys from Provo, and three from Salt Lake while I was in New Caledonia, that I went Fla. Lt. Merlynn Mendenhall Of The SPARS Here Merlynn Mendenhall, who has been stationed with the SPARS at Brooklyn, Mass., spent a few days of the past week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Mendenhall Jr., and also planned to visit her brother, bro-ther, Lt. Keith Mendenhall, in California. Cal-ifornia. Officer Visits Relatives Here Lt. J. Lewis Hanley flew from El Paso, Texas, to Utah recently and spent a short time with his sister, Mrs. Lester E. Davis and family in Springville. Service Man Returns After Visit Cpl. Ronald E. Davis was a visitor visi-tor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester E. Davis recently, coming by plane from Washington, D. C. Owing to shortage of raw materials brought on by the tear, the Wrigley people aren't able to make enough Quality Gun for us here at home and the boys oeerteas both. So, although they can't tiee you your old favorite brands of shewing turn right now, they are giving giv-ing you (hit column of news about your friends and relatives in the Armed Fortes. Capt. Robert Cranmer Is In England through "boot camp" with in Far-ragut, Far-ragut, Idaho. Joe Salisbury. James A. Thompson Writes Appreciation James A. Thompson writes from Camp Claiborne, La., where he was recently transferred and expresses ex-presses his appreciation for the Springville Herald. He also says, "I found when I got here, Marcus Mar-cus Johnson, from Spanish Fork, Pfc, and had a nice talk with him, and then to my very nice surprise Cpl. Carl Miller entered the outfit and now, yesterday, down at Co. D, I found Staff Sgt. Wayne Miller Mil-ler and Pfc. Allan Stewart, so it's such not a bad world after all, but we all prefer Utah and our beautiful beau-tiful Wasatch mountains. Thompson, A recent communication from headquarters air service command U. S. strategic air forces in Europe, Eu-rope, states that Capt. Robert Cranmer is now overseas, stationed station-ed somewhere in England, and that his next station will be one from which Amerca's fighting planes take off to smash the Nazi war machine. He is a son of Mrs. Bill Obye of this city. David Alleman Gets Wings And Commission David Alleman, son of Mrs. Emma Em-ma K. Alleman of this city recently re-cently graduated from the Advance Ad-vance 2-Engine Pilot school at Williams Field, Chandler, Arz., and has been commissioned a second sec-ond lieutenant according to word received from Williams Field, Arizona. Smith writes from Kingman, Ariz., that he appreciates ap-preciates getting the Springville Herald very much and thanks those responsible for the subscrip-ton. subscrip-ton. Along with the letter comes a change of address for the soldier. sol-dier. Local Man Travels Via Bomber Flight Officer Frank Butler visited vis-ited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Butler, here recently, coming in Completes Basic Flying Course Harold Gividen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Gividen of Mapleton, has completed his basic flying course at the Marana Army Air Field, Tucson, Ariz., and will go to an advanced training school to complete his last phase of training train-ing after which he will be awarded the coveted silver wings of a pilot in the army air corps. Local Man Gets Wings And Commission Ray H. Bjarnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray I. Bjarnson of this city, has received his silver wings and a commission of second lieutenant in the army air corps, according to word received here. He graduated from the Marfa, Texas AAF Advanced Two-Engine Pilot School, having previously previous-ly training at the Merced Army Air Field, Merced, Calif. A graduate of the local high school, Lt. Bjarnson attended the Utah State Agriculture college before be-fore going into the service. Serviceman Sends Appreciation Letter Gentlemen : I have been receiving the Springvlle Herald since last October, Octo-ber, and I'm sorry I haven't taken time before now to write and tell you I really appreciate the news from home and want to thank you a large bomber from Deming, N. M. He piloted the plane in and on his return circled his home in Springville. Keith Davis Returns - After Visit Here Keith Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester, E. Davis, has returned to camp at Fort Bragg, N. C, after visiting his parents and other relatives rel-atives and friends here. Lt. Don Bird And Larry Bird Visit Here ' During their recent visit with relatives and friends in Mapleton and Springville, Lt. Don Bird and his brother, Larry Bird, sons of Mrs. Myrtle Bird, Mapleton, called in at the Herald office to express their appreciation for the Springville Spring-ville Herald, both stating they felt it was a wonderful project initated by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. Lt. Don Bird has successfully success-fully completed 51 missions over Europe, while his brother Larry, following in his footsteps, is also advancing rapidly in the air corps and after his furlough here will go to an advanced army air force gunnery school at Fort Meyers, |
