Show Memorial Service Honors War Heroes Plaque Unveiled With Names of Men, Women Who Have Served in Present Conflict; Local Legion Post Has Charge of Exercises Several hundred townspeople from Springville and Mapleton attended the memorial service held at ' Memorial hall Monday evening, eve-ning, honoring those who have lost their lives in the present war and those who are missing. The exercises were under the direction of the Springville post of American Legion, with Commander Comman-der J. Y. Bearnson presiding. J. W. Grant was general chairman of the service, assisted by a large group of committee members. During the evening, Lt. Don Bird of Mapleton, who has won numerous awards since going into the service more than three years ago and especially during his 51 missions over Europe, spoke. He paid tribute to the integrity and loyal spirit of the people of England Eng-land and mentioned that had it not been for their shrewdness, those islands would have, been taken by the Nazis in their first blitz raids. He told a number of interesting stories concerning the customs of the English people and he also expressed ex-pressed pleasure at being able to return to his native state and town on furlough. Judge Joseph E. Nelson also spoke during the evening on policies poli-cies which should be adopted by the allied countries in dealing with enemy countries and their leaders after the war is won. He paid special tribute to the men who have lost their lives, to those who are missing and to those who are still in the fight. He also urged that everyone make it their business to keep up the home front. The musical program consisted of a vocal .solo by Mrs. F. C. Packard, accompaned by Mrs. Max Sumsion, and a vocal duet by Harrison Har-rison Conover and Mrs. Leon Bird. At the close of the exercises, those assembled were invited to witness the unveiling of a large wood plaque on the east front lawn of Memorial hall grounds on which is printed the names of Springville and Mapleton men in the armed forces. Commander Bearnson also asked that in cases where names have been omitted or where the spelling is incorrect, that parents or friends are asked to contact George Nelson at the postoffice, and a correction would be made. Lt. Don Bird, Eldean Weight and Lt. Ray L. Bjarnson, who were all at home on furlough and attended the exercises, assisted in unveiling the plaque. Commander Bearnson explained that the board was temporay and an effort was being made to place everyone's name who has served in the present conflict on the list so that a permanent plaque can be made after the war. |
