Show Fruit Growers to Begin Spraying Of Or chards Soon Apricot blossoms are now showing show-ing pink. This generally means that within a few days fruit growers grow-ers will be making their dormant and dolayed dormant spray appli- ,cations says Mr. Joal C. Barlow, Assistant County Agricultural Agent. Whether lime-sulfer, dormant oil or a combination of oil and lime-sulfur lime-sulfur are used, will depend upon the insects to be controlled. Often it is advisable to apply lime-sulfur as a dormant spray one year and alternate with oil the next. However, How-ever, where mildew is a problem, some type of sulfur should be applied. ap-plied. For dormant spraying use 4 to 5 gallons of 84 oil emulsion or 3 to 3y2 gallons of 99 commercial dormant oil to make each 100 gallons gal-lons of Spray. When lime-sulfur is used as a delayed dormant, 10 gallons gal-lons testing 32 Baume should be used. A good delayed dormant spray is the combination spray. It consists of 3 gallons of lime-sulfur (32 Baume) and 1 gallon dormant oil. When the combination spray is used, the oil should be added to the tank when it is about !3 full, and the lime-sulfur added when the tank 'Is almost full. This will help break up the oil so that a more uniform mixture is applied. Apricot trees are particularly susceptable to lime-sulfur injury. Do not spray apricots with lime-sulfur. lime-sulfur. Damage to Delicious apple buds has occurred at times when dormant strength lime-sulfur has been applied as a delayed dormant spray. Caution: When lime-sulfur has been applied as a delayed dormant spray do not apply summer oil for at least 60 days, because of probable prob-able foliage injury and fruit drop.
