Clyde Construction company of Springville this week became the owners of a Model B Electric Tournapul,. the first big piece of machinery of its kind in Utah and in the western United States. Some idea of the enormity of the new equipment is seen in the fact that it wieghs about 34 .tons. It is 40 feet long; 15 feet high and ahout 12 feet across. Each of the four tires stands higher than a man, about sevent feet. The equipment is used to move dirt, scraping and hauling about 50 tons or 23 cubic yards in one operation. oper-ation. Operated with a 300 horsepower horse-power engine it is run by one man and is said to be as easy to handle as an ordinary automobile. Costing approximately $43,000, the Tournapul can travel on the highway at 30 miles an hour. It would take a small fortune to retire re-tire it as each tire costs in the neighborhood of $2500. , One of only 25 such machines in the entire United States, the new equipment is "being tried out" so to speak on some work at the subdivision sub-division southeast of Brookside. Later it will be taken to Wyoming on highway construction work. The machine will undoubtedly prove useful on some of the jobs recently awarded the construction |
