ABC is planning to spend "several "sev-eral million dollars" for the purchase pur-chase of 20 or more ',"' ' radio and TV shows . . . They made a good start with the purchase of "Screen Guild," always al-ways a popular AM show . . . Arthur Lake, the radio and screen "Dagwood," is negotiating for a radio show of his own . . . Lisa Kirk is headed for Hollywood and a screen test. PLATTER CHATTER COLUMBIA: Lots of records for your library hitting the music shops these days . . . One of the best is Ken Griffin's renditions of two beautiful oldies, "Are You Lonesome Lone-some Tonight?" with "When I Lost You" backing it ... A combination of Gene Autry and Dinah Shore may seem strange, but there's nothing strange about their stirring rendition of "The Old Rugged Cross" , . . . The reverse carries another hymn, "In the Garden" . . . Dinah gets into the groove with a solo that's solid, "I Still Get a Thrill," an oldie that's making a strong comeback . . . "Simple Melody" Mel-ody" is on the flip. Still on Columbia, a new singer with a powerful voice, Tony Bennett, Ben-nett, gives out with a terrific cutting cut-ting of "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams" . . . That popular "I Wanna Be Loved" backs it . . . Another good singer. Herb Jeffries, has a fine arrangement of "The Pagan Love Song" with "Call Iler Savage" on the reverse . . . Those who go for a mambo beat will love Xavier Cugat's latest "You Never Had It So Good" . . . "Strange Mood" backs it. CAPITOL: "Stars and Stripes Forever" is done excitingly by Gordon MacRae with the support of Paul Weston and the Les Baxter chorus . . . "Hongi Tongi Hoki Poki" is its coupling. |
