Show HIDDEN TAXES RAISE PRICES Paying taxes is an obligation of any good citizen and we know that citizens don't mind paying taxes when they f eel they are properly spent. All the taxes we now pay, because 'of the excessive cost of war plus ' the cost of federal, state and local governments, are bad enough when we know we are paying them, but the HIDDEN TAXES, which cover us like a blanket, are the really bad ones. Hidden taxes show up in practically every item which we buy. The merchant is often blamed for the high prices of merchandise when it is really the hidden taxes which keep the cost high. Many citizens do not realize that when we buy a loaf of bread, we are paying 151 different taxes. On a pair of overalls, there are 148 different taxes. There are 154 different taxes on each bar of soap; 201 on a gallon of gasoline and 205 on a new automobile. Baby powder which costs 47 cents includes 18 cents in taxes and baby shoes, which cost $3, includes $1 taxes. The merchants get the blunt of blame when we order a ton of coal for $15 and we hardly realize that $5 of the amount is for taxes ' those little hidden taxes, which we all must pay. If you take a trip, you will find that taxes more than double the cost of bus or train ticket, yet we fail to take into consideration that it is not the transpora-tion transpora-tion company which is benefited by the high rates. When you go to the movies, 40 per cent of the cost of your ticket is taxes, those little hidden taxes which few of us realize we are paying at the time. Concealed taxes help make the high prices we pay for practically everything. If you get mad reading this and want to eat a' candy bar as you cool off, remember re-member that 30 per cent of the price you pay for the bar is hidden taxes. There just isn't anything we can do to hide from those hidden taxes they are as certain cer-tain as death, only difference they come more often. |
