Show Service Held . . . r I tit -- I ? ''' ' ' John J. Roberson Funeral Services He!d for John J. Roberson Final rites for John J. Roberson, 84, were held Monday in the Second-Eighth LDS ward church under un-der the direction of Bishop Edward H. Boyer of the Eighth ward. Mr. Roberson died March 31 at his home following a heart attack. He had been in ill health for some time. He was born December 25, 1870 in Georgia, the son of John Newton New-ton and Martha Ann Davenport Roberson. He received his education educa-tion in Georgia and Colorado. Mr. Roberson came to Utah in 1885 and married Ann Spafford April 6, 1894 in the Salt Lake LDS Endowment House. They moved to Springville in 1904 where Mr. Roberson Rob-erson worked as a plasterer and brick mason. He was a prison guard for a number of years and a peace officer in Springville for several years. For 20 years he was a custodian of the Jefferson and Washington schools. It was during these years that Mr. Roberson began be-gan working with the students in sports and was beloved for his outstanding leadership in organizing organiz-ing teams in the various sports, particularly Softball. He stimulated interest in this to the point of bringing together some of the most outstanding girl softball players in the state to win state and national na-tional honors in Chicago in 1941. He was a favorite among children wherever he was and particularly loved to play the roll of Santa Clans to his family of Springville children during the Christmas season. sea-son. Mrs. Roberson preceded him in death." having passed away June 29, 1951. Survivors include one son, Clarence Ray Roberson. Louisville, Louis-ville, Kv.; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Coreene) Booth, Springville; Spring-ville; five grandchildren: one brother, Edward Roberson, Fruita, Colo.; and one sister, Mrs. Lester Bingham Vernal. Interment was in the Springville city cemetery under the direction of the Claudin Funeral home. |
