Show Our Servicemen . . In a letter received recently by Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Eggertsen from their son Dr. Paul Eggertsen, he stated that he had received a promotion pro-motion to major in the army air force stationed in Japan with the 98th Bomb. Wing. He related how the care of 1,000 men was keeping him busy and he felt that it would be perhaps eight months or more before he would be able to return to the U. S. Dr. Eggertsen described the Japanese family life as pleasant and rich and the country as a whole as fantastic. He said the people are poor almost to oblivion but they are clean and even with the many shops and homes, every- home on furlough from the air force base at Wichita Falls, Tex visiting his parents and relatives and friends in Mapleton. He is to report to California, leaving here Oct. 20, and expects to leave for overseas duty soon. , Glenn Coffman, Jr., was home for three days last week on a pass from the army camp at Desert Rock, 60 miles north of Las Vegas Nev. He has been engaged in survey sur-vey work at the camp site, with the 231st Engineers. He called the Herald office to express his appreciation for the home-town newspaper. thing seems very clean. He described des-cribed the Japanese as appreciative apprecia-tive of the humorous side of life and it evidently amused Dr. Eggertsen Egg-ertsen to see them laugh with their mouths wide open and rows of teeth with fillings showing. He said the Japanese in the area in which he is stationed are hard workers and have a respect for their families and homes and especially es-pecially do they love children. Richard Johnson is home to stay after a year spent in California Calif-ornia with the air force. He, with his wife, the former Beverly Child, have been making their home in Long Beach during his training. He was a member of the reserves. Upon his return home, Richard called in at the Herald office to express his appreciation for the Springville Herald, which has been going to him regularly with the compliments of Ralph Child and the Springville Herald. Sgt. and Mrs. John J. Russell and two little daughters who have been visiting John's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Russell in Springville, Spring-ville, left Monuday for Los Angeles, Ang-eles, Calif., where Mrs. Russell will stay with her parents until John returns. He is stationed with the 145th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla., and expects to go overseas over-seas in the near future. Pfc. Neill Allan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Allan of Mapleton is |
