Show Class B Tournament Opens Wednesday, March 12 -15 in Ute Fieldhouse After losing a golden opportunity of going into the state tournament as the Nebo division champion with a heart-breakine 44-48 loss to Spanish Fork last Friday night, Coach Paul Wilson and his team did a fine job of snatching up the play-off tourney berth Tuesday against Payson 52-35. 52-35. In winning the play-off for second sec-ond place in the district and tournament tourn-ament berth at the Y fieldhouse Tuesday night, tho two teams put up a brilliant battle throughout the first half and rang up a 24-22 count at intermission for the Red Devils. Marlin Giles, who had trouble with his floor play, tallied some important counters in the opening quarter and John Gustin, playing his usual cool, outstanding outstand-ing game, connected both from way outside and under the hoop to keep the Devils ahead by about three points throughout most of tho first half. Doug Smoot added his share of points in the first half thriller. Payson's high percentage per-centage of shots made throughout the half kept them in the running all the way to the mid-game buzzer. buz-zer. l'lay Cautiously ... Coach Wilson's club opened the third quarter cautiously after Pay-son Pay-son missed two beautiful scoring opportunities and after two minutes min-utes with neither team hitting a bucket, Gustin and Smoot took the game in hand and with some sensational sen-sational hand-off s and ball, hawking hawk-ing by Gustin, the duo sank five quick baskets, Smoot getting 3 in three tries. Binks and Mackley, and Eves and Francis did yoe-man yoe-man work in ball sniping and retrieving re-trieving and blocked several Pay-son Pay-son passes and shots, to assist in the quick forward push that left the Devils holding a comfortable 11 point margin at the end of the third quarter. The final quarter saw the Devils very methodically and significantly signifi-cantly too controlling the ball and maintaining the well-earned lead. The control game paid off and before the quarter was half over the Smoot-Gustin-Giles offensive of-fensive combination which counted for 17, 20 and 7 points respectively, had rung up an invinsible lead. Gustin left the game on fouls midway mid-way in the final count. Springville's subs took over in the final two minutes and ran up the margin of victory to 17 points. The victory gave the Devils a spot in the Class B Tourney which starts Wednesday, Wednes-day, March 12 in the U of U field-house. field-house. In a game that won't soon be forgotten by either Spanish Fork or Springville, the Red Devils lost the Nebo title to the Dons 44-48 after playing one of their best I '' ' 1 1 1 J'"" '! games of the season for three quarters in which they held a onetime one-time lead of 14 points. What happened hap-pened after the third quarter when the Devils still tenaciously held on to a 38-22 lead, is a story book finish for Spanish Fork and a sad tale that only an Ev Shelton club might have averted for Spring-villo. Spring-villo. Both teams played terrific ball and Springville's all-state candidate, candid-ate, Gustin, smothered the hoop for 18 points. Smoot's brilliant floor game and offensive play netted him 12 counters. Rowe and Evans swished in 15 and 13 damaging counters respectively from all over the floor for the winning Dons. The Payson - Springville game, in which more than 3,500 rabid fans from both towns stretched their vocal chords in cheering unison, uni-son, set up something of a record in attendance at any one single high school game in this area.
