Show Utahns, Others At Unveiling Fete in Illinois New Salem, 111. More than one hundred Utahns and scores of the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Je-sus Christ of Latter-day Saints were in attendance here Monday of last week at the unveiling' of a statue of Abraham Lincoln, the gift of the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers to the state of Illinois. The presentation was made by Nicholas G. Morgan Sr. society president and was accepted on behalf be-half of the state by Governor William Wil-liam G. Stratton. Many of Illinois officialdom participated and with officers of the National SUP attended at-tended a luncheon as the guests of the Governor and his staff. Arriving in Springfield Saturday Satur-day night, the Utahns journeyed Sunday to Nauvoo, where they participated in a Northern States Mission, which was in charge of President Isaac A. Smoot. Statue unveiling ceremonies were held Monday beginning at 10 a.m. An outstanding feature of the program was the presentation of a pageant under the direction of the Illinois State Historical Society, depicting the life of Lincoln Lin-coln in New Salem. The statue is nine feet in height and rests on a seven foot base of polished granite. Inscribed on the base are the famous words of the Great Emancipator: "With Malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right." The statue has been declared by art critics as one of the finest pieces of work sculptured by Dr. Avard Fairbanks, noted Utah sculptor and former dean of the University of Utah school of Fine After the unveiling ceremonies, the Utah group visited a number of cities and towns in the Illinois and Missouri district which are famous in LDS church history. |
