Utahns enjoyed another year of increasing income during 1953 although al-though their per capita income was still below the national average, it was reported in a Utah Foundation Founda-tion Research Brief released today. to-day. Using U. S. Department of Commerce data just published, the brief reported- that individual income in-come of persons in Utah reached the all-time high of $1.1 billion for the 1953 calendar year. This was an increase of 26 since 1950 and 3 over 1952. The rise in income was led by manufacturing payrolls which increased in-creased 11 between 1952 and 1953. Mining payrolls rose 9 while trade and service payrolls and government payments each were 6 above the previous year. The Utah Foundation release noted not-ed that farm income declined very sharply (29) for 1953. Construction Construc-tion payrolls were also reported to be down 5. Income per person averaged $1,510 in Utah for 1953. It was reported that this was $55 below the average for the Mountain States and $199 under the national nation-al average. The principal sources of Utah income in order of their size were: trade and service, government payments, manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and construction. Noting Not-ing that government payments ac-counted ac-counted for 23.6 of all income j received by Utahns, the Foundation Founda-tion observed that only two other states, 'Virginia and New Mexico, received a greater percentage of their income from this source.. Utah Foundation points out that while the importance of manufacturing manufac-turing in the general economy is less pronounced in Utah than in the nation as a whole, its importance im-portance in the State is increasing increas-ing rapidly and Utah is second only to Colorado among the Mountain Moun-tain States in manufacturing activity. ac-tivity.
