Show Essay Contest Winners Receive Cash Awards Three cash prizes were awarded students of the Springville senior high schobl who placed first, second sec-ond and third in the annual Americanism Am-ericanism essay contest, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, it was announced today by Mrs. Dave Thomas, unit president. A check for $5 was presented to Mary Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Walker, who received receiv-ed first place; Lewis B. Childs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Childs! $3, for second place and Robert Crandall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crandall, $2, for third place The presentations were made at the meeting of the Legion Auxiliary on Wednesday evening when the contest winners read their winning win-ning essays. Mrs. Beth Johnson, unit vice-president vice-president was in charge. Mrs. Lola Weight, chairman of the contest, reported that some very fine entries were received the students being asked to write t'hem. as an English assignment. The English teacher selected the best compositions and from these the three best were chosen by three judges from the Legion Auxiliary who did not know the identity of the writers. The subject suggested for the essays was: "The Rights and Duties Du-ties of an American," and some very fine ideas on the subject were expressed. |
