Show SEAGULLS ; DAMAGE CHERRIES Utah's historic seagull made famous through its destruction of crop pests in early pioneer days, has apparently turned traitor with fruit growers in this vicinity, and is reported doing considerable ; damage to cherry orchards. It is not an uncommon sight to see 20 or more of these large birds perched in a single cherry tree. While state game laws protect this species, the farmers are trying every possible means to save their crops without harming the gull. Whether low water at the lake has made food more scarce or whether the birds appetites have taken a turn for fruit is not known but it ithe first time in the history of loo- growers that the fruit crops have been damaged by seagulls. |
