Show or of we the laugley tariff the republican publican Irve members 0 of congress 9 ress when they come together for the regular session which begins next net Von monday day will have no occasion to re gret their action in the enactment at the recent session of the dingley tariff law the doleful predictions which were made by the democrats about the prospective operation oi of the republican tariff measure which was enacted at the special session a few months ago 0 are not aiming iming realized on the contrary the four months in whish it has been tested have proven that th republicans made no mistake in their action with reference ferenze re to td this measure its earnings in the four months in which it has been in operation are many millions in excess of those of the corresponding months in the history of the wilson law and a nd are sufficient to fully justify the belief of the R republicans publicans public ans that it will when normal conditions are resumed prove ample in its qualities as a revenue producer and in its effect upon our commerce the receipts of the treasury during the first four months of the operation of the law will am in round numbers to while the wilson law in its first four months earned about when it is considered that the wilson law had bad the benefit of enormous importations which had been held back in order to get the advant advantage ige of the lower t tariff ariff rates which it gave and that the dingley law labored under the disadvantage of very small importations because of the heavy shipments into the country prior to its enactment it will be seen that the epe operations rations of tuu the new law indicate that it is to be much more successful as a revenue producer than was the wilson law ahe further fact that the receipts have steadily increased end and that those of november will be in round numbers 25 shows that with the return to normal business conditions and the im importations PO stations which will fol low the absorption ioa of 0 the immense stock which was in hand when the new law went into effect it is perfectly apparent that it will within a very short time b producing all tho the rev denue that the government requires to meet its current expenditures and a surplus to put into the bink banking irig fund something which has not been done in any period of the wilson law the first november under the dingley law produced of revenue while the first november under the wilson law produced but 3 of revenue when it is considered that these satisfactory earnings of the Di dingley rigley law are produced without ary acy considerable erable receipts from sugar wool cr many others of the revenue producing arti articles cleg with which the country had bad heen been filled prior to the enactment of the law it will be tie se n that when the present rat slicks acks of those articles are utilized and the importations resumed there will almost surely burely be an ample revenue the customs receipts from sugar alone alona are expected to run ULA ubo per month aud and it is able that the importations of sugar w wil 11 begin shortly after the opening of the nw new year while importations of wool and other articles of that char abar cc aeter er will also swell the receipts materially teri ally |
