Show We Still Have Money Depression or no depression, the American public still seems able to pay its way to sports events in record-breaking numbers whenever it gets an attraction that looks good to it. The Olympic games drew around 100,000 people for the opening events, and followed it with a crowd of 50,000 for the second day's doings. And on that second day, far across the country, 80,000 people went to see the Cleveland Indians play the Philadelphia Athletics in a fight for second place in the league standing. All of this, of course, doesn't prove that the nation has suddenly regained its prosperity. But it does show that the sports lover is not yet completely broke. Offer him a real spectacle and he'll set the turnstiles clicking as of yore. |
