Show EIRE CREW IKES m TO SAFETY Inhabitants ; Fleeing From Town In Fire's Path. PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 4 (U.R) Twenty-five fire fighters, fight-ers, marooned for 24 hours in an old burned spot with fire raging through virgin timber all around them, escaped to safety today. The men were missing from the fire which has swept the coast range mountains for more than 36 hours, done millions of dollars damage, wiped out a number of logging camps, and which engulfed 1 the town of Cochran, . principal community of the area, today. Millions of feet of timber have been destroyed by the blaze, which i was swept onward all day yester- . day and all last night by a hot, dry east wind which did not subside sub-side during the night. All of Cochran's women and children chil-dren the population 200 were rushed out of the area during the night and as much furniture and other chattels as could be piled on trucks was removed. The fire this morning was, within 150 feet of the town but was stopped from the south by the Southern Pacific tracks. . However, today it was advancing again from, the east with terrific speed. The town and camp at Edwards had been destroyed. The fire advanced ad-vanced to within 40 feet of En-right En-right early this, morning as the . last telephone call went through. |
