Show RESPECT FOR LAW I SURGED Hoover Appeals To Legion Meet For Leadership; Unemployment Un-employment Seen As Great Economic Problem at Meet. BOSTON, Oct. 6 (UP) A plea to the citizenry for law-observance law-observance and a pledge to labor for working out the unemployment un-employment situation, were delivered here today by President Presi-dent Hoover- in two speeches. To the annual American Legion convention this morning the president appealed for leadership to promote respect for the law of the land. "Without mentioning the prohibition law or its observance, he urged the delegates from the far reaches of, the country to go back home preaching law observance observ-ance by word and action. To the American Federation of Labor convention this afternoon he announced his estimate of the unemployment situation as the greatest economic problem of the nation today. Better Living Invention of new machines replacing re-placing labor is somewhat responsible, respon-sible, he pointed out, but he defended de-fended that progress of genius in industry as of ultimate benefit to the worker. He said it is "leading America toward security, better living and more hours of leisure" than those countries which have the old industrial systems. The chief executive revealed he is working with President Green of the Federation and Employers association-to help meet this technological tech-nological unemployment. At the same time, he denounced destructive competition In industries, indus-tries, referring particularly to the bituminous coal industry. If the laws of the land are responsible for ! such demoralizing effects of an in-; dustry they should be changed, he said. He apparently referred to ; the Clayton act or the Sherman j anti-trust law. Maintain Defens The speeches were the second , and third of his swift swing around the eastern circuit, including Cleveland, where last Thursday he addressed his economic views to the bankers; Boston and Kings Mountain, S. C, where tomorrow he will lead an anniversary celebration cele-bration of the revolutionary battlefield, battle-field, with a speech to that southern south-ern textile district The Legion speech expounded the president's views on veterans' relief, re-lief, .world peace and national defense, de-fense, as well as law observance. Veterans are being cared for at a government expenditure of $900,-000,000 $900,-000,000 annually, he said. Peace was never more secure than today, he said, but declared that national defense de-fense must be maintained. |
