Show I SMITH LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN Repeal, Immediate Modification, Is Urged. By RAYMOND CLAPPER United Preas Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, June 22 (U.R) Former Governor Alfred E. Smith opened his campaign today for the Democratic presidential nomination with a double-barreled attack on prohibition. He counselled unconditional repeal of the eighteenth amendment, preceded by immediate amendment of the Volstead act to increase the alcoholic alco-holic content of legal beverages. He arrived today from New York, hurrying through a cheering throng at the La Salle street station, sta-tion, and appeared an hour later before 200 reporters in the hotel quarters of Jouett ' Shousc, executive execu-tive director of the Democratic national na-tional committee. Wants Nomination With Smith's arrival, the "stop Roosevelt" high command was here ready for business, and awaiting the arrival of a potential re-enforcement, former secretary of the treasury William Gibbs McAdoo, Smith's party insisted that there was no "stop" movement under way, and that Smith is here to get he nomination for himself. ! Smith declared he would go be fore the convention, if necessary, to battle for the election as permanent per-manent chairman of Jeuett Shouse, who is opposed by the Roosevelt group. He also declared he had no second sec-ond choice for the presidential nomination, and that he was leading lead-ing a fight against a "stop Smith" movement which he said began a year and a half ago. He refused to answer whether he would support sup-port the ticket in the coming campaign cam-paign regardless of the person nominated. |
