Show COUNTY MAY ERECT NEW INFIRMARY Question of Selling County Property Brought Forward By Commission. "Shall Utah county sell its present pres-ent Infirmary and construct another at n more suitable place'" TliatAvas the question propounded by James T. Gardner, chairman of the county commission, to a group of businessmen of Provo who met with the commission Tuesday regarding re-garding various questions of interest in-terest to the entire county. Chairman Gardner explained that a .Salt Lake real estatet firm has made an offer to the commissioners to purchase the county infirmary which has served the county for several years. He was of the opinion opin-ion that perhaps a much more suitable suit-able location could be found for such an institution, especially since the present building within the next few years will in too close a proximity to the industrial section, of Provo. He also said that ever since the institution was established the comity infirmary farm has been a drain on the finances of the county and that the farm has never paid for itself. This is partly due to the fact, he said, that most of the male patients of the infirmary are unable to perform the kind of work needed on the farm and that therefore all lnlxir had to be hired. He said that the commission desired de-sired to have the sentiment of the taxpayers of the eonnty before any action was taken towards the sale of the property. On the suggestion' of Senator Le-Iioy Le-Iioy Dixon it was decided to refer the question to the three civic clubs of Provo, all of which will appoint committees who will conjointly make the necessary investigation and then recommend its findings to the county commission. It is understood that the Alderman Alder-man Iteal Estate company of Salt Lake City, the company which has. been selling many of the Steel I City lots, is anxious to purchase the infirmary and remodel it into a ' hotel for the single working men 1 at the blast furnace, coking plant and by-products of the Columbia Steel corporation, the Republic Creosoting plant and other factories which will be established nearby. Representatives of the Alderman company have been negotiating with the commission at different times, according to Chairman Gardner relative to the sale of the property. It was the concensus of opinion among the businessmen present at the meeting that me commission 1 should not he in any haste to (lis-1 pose of the county farm west of the j state highway most of which ad-! ad-! .loins two railroads and is among the .iio:it wta't land for industrial sites to be found in the county. The committee which will investigate investi-gate the feasibility of selling the infirmary will also make some recommendations rec-ommendations ns to the disposal of the county farm. |
