Show SOME LIVELY GRIDTR1CKS Warner and Jones Have Novel Devices of Football Strategy A number of years ago, when the Carlisle Indians trotted on the field at the Harvard stadium to meet the Crimson eleven, Coach Glenn Warner had pads on the jersies that closely resembled a football in size and color. On offense the Indians so carried their arms that a.n optical illusion resulted. It seemed if Carlisle had eleven men, each wilh a football lucked under his arm. Harvard refused to be a sucker for the second time. Howard Jones, resourceful coach of the University of Southern California, Cali-fornia, is credited with the latest form of camouflage, something entirely en-tirely new. It is said that in the big games during the rest of the season the Southern California gridders will appear on the gridiron in blackface. The idea is to make it more difficult diffi-cult for the opposition to pick out the players eligible to receive the forward pass. Such a " scheme would enable Coach Jones to ring in Al Jolson, who could entertain with "Mammy" songs during intermission, without having any charge for professionalism professional-ism raised. |
