Show SPRINGVILLE (UTAH) HERALD rch Pag. Four THE Experts explain why Utah soils need fertilizer for good crops The essential soil elements are nitrogen (for most plants) phosphorus, potassi-um, calcium, magnesium, sul-fur, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, chlorine, and molybdenum. Let's consider the situation on these ele-ments in Utah soils. For field crops, nitrogen and phophorus aare the major concern in the state. Our fer-tilizer pracitice, then, is cen-tered on these two and these alone. Before considering the details on these two, review the status of the other soil elements. The remaining seven soil elements are known as minor or trace elements because they are needed in only very small amounts by crops. Our prin-cipal concern with trace ele-ments is to supply them to plants that have difficulty in using the native supplies in the soil. Status Of The Plant Nutri-ents Under Utah Gonditions Why do we apply fertilizer? What chemical elements are needed by plants to grow and reproduce ? Where do plants obtain these elements? What fertilizer elements are needed in Utah Soils? If you can answer these questions, you have basic in-formation to help you make wise use of fertilizers. Dr. Paul D. Christensen, Utah State University Extension Soil Conservationist, cites the following information to an-swer these pertinent nt questions. We apply fertilizers to the soil to maintain a good sup-ply of plant nutrients for the crop. Of the 92 naturally-occurrin- g chemical elements, 16 have been proved essential for plant growth and reproduc-tion. Three or four of these elements make up 95 of the dry matter of the plants, and fortunately these same ele-ments come from air and wa-ter. All plants obtain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from air and water. In addition, some of the legumes like al-falfa, clovers, peas and beans obtain all or part of their ni-trogen from the air. Common fertilizer practice consistis in maintaining ade-quate supply of the elements taken from the soil. and duct over your kitchen stove, how long since it has had the greasy residue re-moved ? Keeping heating and cook-ing equipment in top operat-ing condition means fuel sav-ings as well as fire safety. So be sure the furnace and stove in your home are on your clean-u- p, check-u- p list. Spring clean, check for safety's sake Any fireman can tell you its actually a fact that a clean house seldom b urns. It's just as true that a "clean stove or furnace seldom burns up the house. Dirty, defective heating and cooking equipment causes the deadliest dwelling fires, ac-cording to National Fire Pro-tection studies. They take about 2,000 lives yearly in this country, and destroy or dam-age about 1,500 homes each week. Now, during Spring Clean Up, is an excellent time- to have heating equipment serv-iced and repaired, before you let it go and get caught by the first cold snap of next fall. It could be time to check the chimney too; it's particu-larly important if you burn wood or coal.
