Show y.-.fV j Sports Here and There By Al Ablett Spring is here and of course that means the end of winter sports such as basketball, skiing ski-ing and bowling and the beginning begin-ning of baseball, golf and tennis. The state high school basketball basket-ball tournament broke all records re-cords for attendance and the number of upsets. The Jordan division again furnished one of the finalists, but when you say that let your voice fall. When you slate thai Davis played in the finals you have come to a period. Jordan, the pre-tour-nament favorite went out of the tourney the second night-Box night-Box Cider gained such a lead in the first half that the Jordan Jor-dan boys, even though they doubled the score in the second sec-ond half, still fell two points short. Granite dropped a heart breaker break-er the opening night to Ogden and went on from there to win consolation- Davis played three tough games and when it came to the last night against Provo they were both tired and tense. Provo, on the other hand, had a fairly easy time reaching the finals. Consequently they had more in reserve. The game was one of the poorest poor-est of the . tournament. Davis dropped to a new all time low when they only made 10 points. Provo got going in the second half and scored 14 points to end up with 21. I still say four nights straight is too much basketball for growing boys. Everyone picks an all-tournament team so here is the Bulletin's: Bul-letin's: Morris of Box Elder at center: Sandlund of Ogden, forward; for-ward; Prusse of Provo, forward; Schofield of Davis and Maughan of South Cache at guards. Prusse at 5' 10" is the smallest man on the squad- The other four boys are well over six feet and they could do everything a basketball bas-ketball player is called upon to do- But to call these teams all-state all-state teams is ridiculous because some of the best individuals never nev-er get to the tournament. The national AAU tournament was won by a California team for the first time since 1919. Twentieth Century of Hollywood Was the winning team. Luisetti, the tourney's top scorer with 93 points, was named outstanding player of the tournament. Baseball is just around the corner and the Industrial league lea-gue teams are lining up their players. Rumor has it that Earl Owen, the former Pinney and Salt Lake star, has signed with Magna. Occie Evans, manager of the Brigham City Peaches, has lined up a couple of DRGW RR stars, Roldo Call at short and Louie Frans at first. Joe Teiak, the big right handed pitcher, is considering con-sidering their offer. Provo has signed a couple of new men, as yet don't know their names. Detroit is afraid that Green-berg Green-berg will be called to the army. I wonder what they would do if they lost Buck Newsome with him. That is about comparable with what happened to Gemmell club. Gene Fish, the leading pitcher of the league last year, is in the army, and Frank Zac-caria, Zac-caria, the perennial home run leader of the league as well as a 350 to 400 hitter every year and classed as one of the best fly chasers in the league, has gone to work in a California ship yard. These two boys will be missed a plenty. Some promising young fellows fel-lows are going into spring training train-ing and from Jimmy Byrnes, Louie Savich, Tommy Pazell and Ernie Sheen will come the new (Continued on Page Four) SPORTS HERE AND THERE By Al Ablett (Continued from page one) stars. But if anyone knows where Gemmell can get a fellow that can buzz that onion like Gene Fish, his address will be welcome. wel-come. Coach Santistevan has hit high school nine working out every night. His big problem will be to find a pitcher to take Stan Long's place. His big right hander has signed with Ogden- The Big leagues have started to swing north, so it won't be long now. In the National league lea-gue it looks like Cincinnati Brooklyn and St. Louis Cardinal? right down to the wire. In tht American league it looks like every team has improved. St. Louis Browns, if they get pitching, pitch-ing, will cause plenty of trouble, as will the Phillies. The Yankees are favorites, but I can't see how they can start with a Rookie combination a-round a-round second base. And as good as Rizzuto and Priddy must be, no one knows how they will go in the regular session with the glare of the spotlight upon them. Rizzuto may be called to the army. Detroit and Cleveland are the teams to beat in my estimation. estima-tion. Come Sunday the Gemmell club bowler will toe the line for the start of the Gemmell handicaD Round Robin that will consist of 16 gamef. Four garnet are to be rolled each Sunday, itarting March 30 and ending April 20. The Gianti won the Gemmell A league championship. Leo Brisk, bil-lie bil-lie Braun, George Badovinais, Bill Ablett and Al Ablett compose com-pose the team. The tallest man on the team was Billie Braun at 5 6". and there wasn't a half inch difference in any of them. Billie Ablett averaged 196 In the play off for five games. See you next week, AL P.S. Wish there was a basketball basket-ball dinner every night!. |
