Show Employment up in county, report shows The Research Unit of the Utah State Employment Service Ser-vice gave indications this week that the Utah County economy econ-omy shows signs of continued growth. Undeterminable, however, how-ever, is the long term stability of this employment gain. Employment continues to rise in Utah County with a converse lowering of unemployment. unemploy-ment. At present 2,300 workers work-ers are still unemployed. This is still a sizable number, but a significant drop compared to February's 4,300 and last month's 2,500. Since February each month has increased total to-tal employment in Utah County. Coun-ty. This month netted a 4.4 increase in total jobs compared compar-ed to May employment totals. This evidence of continued recovery, re-covery, however, doesn't justify complacency. The area has special problems that require long term attention and action. ac-tion. Past year s experiences have shown Utah County to be overly over-ly susceptible to marked cycles of employment and unemployment. unemploy-ment. The area economy is very dependent in the "ups and downs" of our large manufacturing man-ufacturing firms. Manufacturing Manufactur-ing in Utah County accounts for 27.2 of our total non-agricultural non-agricultural employment. The state average is 17. A broader broad-er base is needed in the area industry. More diversified industry in-dustry would lessen the effect one would have on the area economy. If economic recovery continues upward, we must still remain aware of the long term need for industrial expansion expan-sion and growth. |
