Show Students take new class in high school Japanese is being taught at the Springville high school this year for the first time, the language being described as one of six major neglected languages designated by the federal government as critical. Of the six-Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi and Portuguese, only Russian is beginning to be commonly offered of-fered at a pre-college level. College scholarships are available avail-able for all students of these languages and opportunities are expected to come to those who have an understanding of these languages, it is pointed out. Although Japanese was not taught in any high school last year, some six million high school youngsters in Japan are taking English. A study of the Japanese language which is spoken by some 100 million people is expected ex-pected to give students a better bet-ter knowledge of the Oriental culture and thus strengthen the bonds of East-West friendship friend-ship through a better understanding. under-standing. Kennecott Copper provided $500 or one-half of the cost of teaching the Japanese class in Springville. |
