Show Mayor takes stand j Improvement ashed for main highway Following a report by Councilman Blaine Clyde to the city council concerning what the state road commission proposes for Springville's Main Street j in regard to parallel parking and islands, the mayor this week wrote J. Edward Johnson, John-son, deputy director for planning, plan-ning, explaining the stand taken ta-ken by the council. Mr. Johnson John-son had intimated to Councilman Council-man Clyde that unless Springville Spring-ville agreed, to parallel parking, park-ing, the money which could be used for improvements here, might go elsewhere. Springville city officials believe be-lieve that the raised portion in the center of Main Street, should be lowered before parallel paral-lel parking is put into effect. Mr. Johnson had stated previously pre-viously in his letter to the council that, "if we proceed with this project, the problem resulting from the crown in the road could be overcome." The city believes it could be overcome but have expressed some concern as to whether or not it would be overcome, or cut down. The mayor wrote to Mr. Johnson stating that, "if we could be given assurance the crown would be taken down, the City Council would agree to the improvements." The opinion of the City Council is that the only way it would be possible to initiate the proposed pro-posed improvements and. have parallel parking, is to take the center of the road down at least two feet. The mayor further stated that the gutter depth in relation rela-tion to the road now creates quite a parking problem and the council is desireous of improving that condition and not doing something to make it worse. The council further invited a representative of the road commission to meet and discuss the problem further, taking the stand however that the middle of the highway must be lowered before other work is done. |
