Show SOUTH mr C P hull Is now at st augustine THE WITNESSED land of and aliga tors ganv cubans in florida lit present f enquirer correspondence t ST AUGUSTINE florida dec since you froni washington D 0 I 1 have traveled some littly territory and I 1 will attempt to you some idea of the parts or places I 1 have visited on leaving the national capitol I 1 crossed the potomac biyer to alexandria va I 1 then visited mac yemen the home and final resting place of the father of hie country I 1 then continued southward through fredericksburg and near court house to richmond va thus passing over much of the route of which gen grant wrote 1 I will fight it outon thia line if it takes all summer the cars ol 01 battle are to be found in various places along this route and many veara will elapse before they are entirely obliterated f I 1 was at richmond on election day from I 1 went to I 1 then took the norfolk and western E R for appomattox city of appomattox on W E R is three miles southwest of old appomattox court house where tha confederacy Cone deracy with its death 1 the spot where the final stand was made the old court house is no longer the rebut there is a pile of debris there and a tablet bearing these words on this spot sto odthe old court house of virginia erected destroyed by fire 1892 I 1 was also on the eit eaf th a building in which gens grant and lee met and made out the papers for the surrender the building waa torn down in the spring of 1895 for removal to washington D 0 abat owing to financial reverses it was not accomplished and the material is baill pled up around its site the village of old appomattox site of the surrender is situated on a hill with a depression all around it with higher hills beyond the depression in fact I 1 could not better describe abe location than by turning a saucer upside down in a larger the bottom of the saucer turned over would indicate the site of old appomattox the rim of the larger bajcer would indicate the high hilla beyond and between the rim of the larger and the bottom of the smaller the depression from tAppo mattox I 1 went to lynchburg Lynch burs va where I 1 took the southern R R for the south 1 passed danville va eraena graena boro salsbury Sal abury and charlotte na spartanburg and seneca B 0 atlanta macon cordele and and Valdo Bota ga lake acty jacksonville and here I 1 an in st aleua tine florida the oldest cily in the united atalee jacksonville is the largest and most progressive city in the state with perhaps tampa second but st augustine is the most picturesque several of the finest hotels in the world are located hero the city faces the atlantic ocean on the epati and no better view of the ocean can ba had than from the island a mile from the city on which the light house stands we are haying what florida people call cold weather here now but it is mild as compared with more northern climes the palmetto flourishes here in all its glory and the alligator seems toba ag numerous es in louisiana or even more BO I 1 find much in common in the products of florida and louisiana the climate also is very similar from neton B 0 to atlanta ga should ba named the bad country for the soil with little exception is 0 a deep reddish color south eia virginia and Northern north carolina ial the tobacco country virginia horth carolina south carolina and georgia Is the sweet potato country southern north carolina south carolina and georgia is the southeastern cotton belt I 1 think georgia should be called the turpentine state as that industry Is carried on to a greater extent there than at any other place I 1 have visited there ie but ona southern state that I 1 have not been to this year and that one is alabama sines leaving utah havo been through more than thirty and dare say I 1 have seen moro of them than most tourists see on their flying aripa tripa I 1 have been in all the largest cities of the united states and several hundred of the smaller ones it is my present intention to start west early in the spring there are many cabana in this of the country and they are at tent ively atoning for the result of the stricture between uncle sam and spain in act they seem quite anxious for noe ti liliee to be ginand the natives of this section seem about equally as anxious BO I 1 presume uncle barn would have very little difficulty in getting together an army of volunteers sufficiently numerous to eive little spain a spank log OF HUCL |
