I v ! r . .. .. i f f ' : - y J : r ? - t . i f , s Calvin Sumsion Editor's Not A series of "Students of the Week" is be-ing published in the Spring-ville Herald, recognizing stu-dents in the senior class of the high school student body. A student-facult- y committee se-lects the student taking into consideration such attributes as citizenship, school service, at-titude and use of capacities. Calvin Sumsion Busy, popular, extremely talented is Calvin Sumsion, son of Mrs. Julia Sumsion. Calvin has a wide variety of interests, talents, and capabili-ties. He has a pleasing, friend-ly, personality that makes it a pleasure to know him. He is an outstanding student and ranks high in the scholastic standing in his class. Has held many offices in school organ-izations, including vice presi-dent of the Science Club, sports editor of the yearbook, art editor of the school paper, decoration chairman of the Senior Hop, and member of the Jr. Prom committee. Cal-vin has also won awards in various activities. He won first and second place in the Teen Age Driving contest. He has been recognized for his ex-cellent writing in the Art Theme contest; qualified for the National Merit Scholar-ship examination and was a delegate to Boy's State. Cal-vin sings in the A Cappella choir; is a member of the Ski Club, and has appeared many times in assemblies and pro-grams. Always an active church worker, Calvin - is currently serving as president of a young people's group. He won six individual awards for church participation; has earn-ed Duty to God Award, and is an Eagle Scout. After graduation Calvin plans to attend BYU and ma-jor in Architectural Engineer-ing. Republicans in county organize A large delegation of Springville Republicans attend-ed the county organization convention in Provo Saturday-evening-and enjoyed a talk by Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona. Attending the meeting also was the sena-tor's wife and daughter and son-in-la- the latter attendi-ng, the U of U. Robert L. Egbert, chairman of education research at the BYU was named county chair-man succeeding Sterling Jones; Mrs. Ruth Gates Duf-fi- n, Orem, vice chairman win-ning over Helen Parker of American Fork and John O. Allen, contractor of Provo, secretary succeeding Mrs. Har-rison Conover, secretary. Howard Maycock of Spring-ville and George Dart of Spanish Fork, were named members of the state Repub-lican Central committee from district 5, comprising Spring-ville, the east portion of Span-ish Fork and Mapleton. Word yar vet Club members sew, visit - Entre Nous club members brought their handwork to the meeting night at the home of Mrs. Erva Childs and visited as they sewed. The hostess served a nicely arranged lun-cheon to twelve .members. Mrs. Hilda Cherrington will entertain the group at her home for the March meeting scheduled for Thursday the 24th. Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wing Sun-day were their daughter and son-in-la- Kenneth and Helen Cluff of Edgemont. Soldier trains in bear land Army Pfc. Roger J. Robin-son, son of Mr. and Mrs. El-mer K. Robinson, Springville, participated with other per-sonnel from the 9th Infantry in Exercise Little Bear, a winter field training maneu-ver conducted in the frozen Alaskan terrain about 200 miles north of Ancharage re-cently. The exercise, which involv-ed nearly 4,000 troops, was de-signed to determine unit ef-fectiveness in conducting cold-weath- er tactical movements under realistic combat condi-tions. Robinson is regularly as-signed as a rocket launcher gunner in the Infantry's Com-pany B at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. He entered the Army in January 1959 and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. The soldier at-tended Springville high school. " Renewing friendships and acquaintances in Springville the past week end was Or-vil- le Crandall, a former resi-dent who has been making his home in Brooklyn, N. Y. until recently when he moved to Salt Lake City. While here, he was the house guest of a cousin-in-la- Mrs. LeRoy Cur-tis and also visited other re-latives. He visited old land-marks including Kellys Grove and the canyons and in a visit to the Herald office, said he lived in Idaho after leaving Springville and also served in the Navy during World War I. |
